Find out more »FRAMELINE 49: SALLY
Known for being the first American woman to fly in space, astronaut and physicist Sally Ride is one of NASA’s most prominent figures. Even though she logged nearly 350 hours in space, little was known about Ride’s personal life — until now. Currently celebrated as the world’s first-known LGBTQ+ astronaut, Ride had a long-term partnership with Billie Jean King’s mentee-turned-science-writer and professor Tam O'Shaughnessy, which they kept private until Ride’s passing in 2012.
For this Sundance Award-winning documentary, diretor Cristina Costantini (Mucho Mucho Amor) uses a seamless blend of archival footage and intimate interviews to paint an honest and affecting portrait of Ride. Preserved in books, our collective pop-cultural memory, and even a Janelle Monáe song, Ride’s legacy looms large. However, by juxtaposing its titular subject’s storied career with her struggles with fame, privacy, and queerness, this film understands that even history’s most enduring heroes are just like us.
Find out more »FRAMELINE 49: COME SEE ME IN THE GOOD LIGHT
Poet and activist Andrea Gibson’s work is defined by striking vulnerability. A single line of poetry can hold many — often contrasting — truths. Come See Me in the Good Light, which is directed by Ryan White (The Case Against 8, Frameline38) and produced by comedian and writer Tig Notaro (One Mississippi), echoes this multiplicity with its deeply affecting portrait of Colorado’s Poet Laureate.
After receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis, Gibson and their partner, fellow poet Megan Falley, unearth a profound sense of resilience in small, everyday joys. Life’s moments can be both tough and tender, holding grief and humor, and ache and elation, in equal measure. Backed by Glennon Doyle and Abby Wambach and executive produced by Sara Bareilles and Brandi Carlile, this Sundance Festival Favorite Award-winning meditation on mortality illuminates, with exquisite tenderness, what it means to really live.
Find out more »FRAMELINE 49: DREAMS IN NIGHTMARES
Celebrating the complex interior lives and loves of Black queer people across a spectrum of experiences, Dreams in Nightmares is expertly helmed by sophomore director Shatara Michelle Ford (Test Pattern) and authentically and honestly portrayed by a cast of majority queer and trans Black actors. Lyrical and rich, the film invites us to imagine how we heal best, what is gained by saying yes, and what we lose when we deny our truths.
Struggling after multiple layoffs and haunted by dream messages from the ancestors that aren’t yet clear, Z (Denée Benton) jumps into the prickly, comfortable, deeply-loving bonds of two of her oldest friends for a short New York vacation. When they realize their missing fourth, Kel, hasn’t been heard from in months, the three set off on a spontaneous cross-country road trip/rescue mission, with a trope-defying Black queer bent. As they travel further than they anticipated in search of Kel, the trio confront personal demons and messengers, interpersonal audacity, and their own choices that increase — or sacrifice — their Black, queer, artistic joy.

Find out more »SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN (Party at the Parkway)
A silent film star falls for a chorus girl just as he and his delusionally jealous screen partner are trying to make the difficult transition to talking pictures in 1920s Hollywood.
Find out more »FRAMELINE 49: RIVER OF GRASS
The spirit of the Florida Everglades is distilled with poetic beauty in River of Grass, a multi-faceted look at the climate crisis with an eye towards history and local specificity. Director Sasha Wortzel previously brought the short films Happy Birthday, Marsha! (Frameline42) and How to Carry Water (Frameline47) to the Festival, and now returns with this evocative piece of nonfiction filmmaking.
River of Grass utilizes archival footage and finds inspiration in the writing of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, all serving a vital message of preservation and protection of the fragile environmental present. Wortzel captures the plight of the community to fight for the local wildlife, gracefully weaving a tapestry that considers this ecosystem in both a spiritual and physical sense. As history and a terrifying future collide in the filmmaker’s soulful verse, the film’s composition penetrates with its daring call to action.
Find out more »FRAMELINE 49: OUTERLANDS
In a San Francisco losing its soul to rapid gentrification, nonbinary newbie Cass (Asia Kate Dillon, in a breakout performance) barely scrapes by nannying for wealthy kids, waiting tables, and dealing just enough party drugs to cover rent on a small apartment. A one-night stand with coworker Kalli (Louisa Krause) sparks something real, but when Kalli disappears — leaving her 11-year-old daughter, Ari (Ridley Asha Bateman), in Cass’ hands — the seams start to come undone.
Capturing San Francisco from a unique angle, this slowburn, moving feature debut from Elena Oxman (Lit, Frameline38) frames its character study of Cass and Ari through Raymond Carver’s poem “Late Fragment” — a quiet gut-punch about wanting to be loved that feels very apt here. Playing Outerlands, a lo-fi video game about a stranded astronaut searching for a lost ship, Cass and Ari form a bond that nudges them toward healing old scars through new ties and responsibilities, while wrestling with their place in a city pushing its longtime residents out. With supporting roles from Lea DeLaria and Daniel K. Isaac (reteaming with Billions co-star Dillon here), Outerlands digs into lingering childhood trauma, substance abuse, and the complexity of caring for someone else when you’re still figuring out how to care for yourself.
Find out more »FRAMELINE 49: THE SERPENT’S SKIN
Twentysomething Anna (Alexandra McVicker, October Crow) finally leaves her small, transphobic hometown for good and quickly begins dating goth tattoo artist Gen (Avalon Fast, Castration Movie) after the two discover they share supernatural powers. But before Anna can call up the U-Haul, Gen inadvertently summons a demon through the sick neck tattoo she gives sensitive guitarist Danny (Jordan Dulieu). As Danny — or whatever’s inside of him — begins feeding off their friends, it’s up to Anna and Gen to figure out how to use their powers to save everyone before it’s too late.
The sixth-and-latest feature by 20-year-old filmmaking force of nature Alice Maio Mackay (Carnage for Christmas, Frameline48), The Serpent's Skin like a trans take on The Craft or the YA horror paperback you wished you had in high school. Returning to the same premise as her early short The Serpent’s Nest (2021) and working with a group of trans film luminaries — including producer Louise Weard (Castration Movie, Frameline49), editor Vera Drew (The People’s Joker), and colorist Jessica Dunn Rovinelli (So Pretty), all remarkable filmmakers in their own right — The Serpent’s Skin sees the full blossoming of the bold neo-Araki aesthetic that has made Mackay one of the most exciting voices in this current wave of independent trans cinema.

Find out more »FRAMELINE 49: CASTRATION MOVIE, PT 1
Michaela “Traps” Sinclair (writer/director/star Louise Weard) is a trans sex worker trying to get by in Vancouver while also mentoring her recently-out friend Adeline (Aoife Josie Clements) and making an attempt at pursuing actual motherhood. Meanwhile, a lowly production assistant named Turner (Noah Baker) finds himself dangerously spiraling into inceldom as his current relationship implodes.
The first two chapters (running a total of 275 minutes with intermission) of what will eventually become a 16+ hour film, Louise Weard’s Castration Movie is easily the longest movie to ever play Frameline — and for good reason. Featuring appearances from festival favorites Vera Drew (The People’s Joker), Alice Maio Mackay (Carnage for Christmas, Frameline48), Cricket Arrison (By Design, Frameline49), Avalon Fast (The Serpent’s Skin, Frameline49), and more, the film is quite possibly one of the most vivid portraits of trans life to have ever been captured on obsolete Hi8 videotape. Don’t let the runtime scare you — Castration Movie is electrifying, uncompromising, inspiring, and real in a way that so little trans cinema is.

Find out more »FRAMELINE 49: LAKEVIEW
Come on down to Lakeview for a restful turned reckless retreat with a group of queer women reuniting for a weekend to celebrate a divorce, new loves, and old flings. Darcy, our divorcée and a resident wine mom, is joined by Lauren who appears to be disciplined but is dating a woman far too young for her. Phoebe, the new beau, is an empath and just happy to be there. Julien and Juli Anne are married and expecting but one of them is more excited than the other for the new addition to their family. Lucy is going through a breakup of her own with questionable coping mechanisms. What do they all have in common? Everyone’s been with Dax, except Phoebe who’s vying for her turn
Including original music and performances by Hilary Adams that will make you weep, Lakeview navigates power dynamics in messy but loving relationships while questioning what happens when lessons learned don’t lead to patterns broken.

Exploring his blossoming sexuality in the vibrant Copenhagen nightlife, young Johan (Magnus Juhl Andersen) works at a popular bathhouse and meets local hookups on the apps. When one online connection turns out to be a trans man named William (Nina Rask), Johan is unsure of how to proceed but immediately taken in by William's charm. Their tryst blooms into a torrid affair that opens Johan up to an entire new world, meeting William's trans friends and learning the daily struggles they face as they fight for access to surgery and hormones. Johan is also unexpectedly confronted with the persistent social norms that still exist in the gay community and is forced to question whether he has what it takes to push back.
Writer-director Mathias Broe's Sauna is a confident debut feature, avoiding any easy tropes by delving headfirst into the complexities of queer relationships and the clashes that erupt within them. Complimenting Broe's direction are the raw and striking lead performances by Andersen and Rask, which make Johan and William such indelible, real characters.

Find out more »FRAMELINE 49: DREAMERS
Taken to a UK detention center, sullen and too petrified to talk, Isio, an undocumented Nigerian fleeing homophobia, is assigned to a room with Farah, a soft-mannered yet gutsy artist who knows more about the ins and outs of the immigration system. While Isio would rather sit with her despair than make any friends, Farah’s helpfulness in the appeals process gives Isio a new outlook on her future while challenging her views of right and wrong. As friendliness progresses into flirtatious exchanges, Isio finds an unexpected chance at happiness and allows herself the luxury of dreams.
Making its world premiere at Berlinale and based loosely on her life, writer/director Joy Gharorro-Akpojotor’s timely and tender look at the uncertainty of the migrant experience gives voice to oft-unnamed asylum seekers navigating a confusing, belittling system while trying to maintain hope and sense of self.
