What Interior. Leather Bar. did for Cruising, Jason and Shirley did for Oscar-winner Shirley Clarke’s 1967 film Portrait of Jason — a controversial, confessional-style documentary about nightclub performer Jason Holliday, which was infamously shot in one grueling 12-hour session at the Chelsea Hotel. Critics have long been divided over the film: Did Shirley bait Jason into unraveling on camera or was the result Jason’s plan all along? In 2015, director Stephen Winter (Chocolate Babies, Frameline21) confronted this question head on.

Winter’s cinematic response to Clarke presents a fictitious account of the making of her film, one that challenges the idea of who gets to take ownership of a person’s story. Mixing fantasy and reality with enthralling performances from Jack Waters and Sarah Schulman in the title roles, Jason & Shirley Revisited — now recut and remastered by Winter for its 10th anniversary — explores the intersection of art and exploitation, race and privilege, and gender and power.

It’s a dingy bar bathroom and a cis guy with huge muscles is fucking you doggy style against the sink… Or maybe not… In Al’s cartoons, anything is possible, even if it's the furthest thing from reality. In truth, Al (EJ Marcus) is an awkward trans guy who is completely in love with his oblivious best friend, Jesse (Morgan Sullivan of Here With You, Frameline43) who is also a trans guy. When the two are roommates at a queer cartoonist camp full of alcohol and hormones, midnight skinny dipping, and more than a few sprinkles of trans joy, who knows what could happen?

With trans folks in front of and behind the camera (executive produced by Lilly Wachowski!), this live-action/animation hybrid reminds us that authenticity, whether it be drawn or lived, is the key to living our best lives.

Somos un cine queer con ambiente familiar y nos esforzamos por ser un lugar donde todos se sientan bienvenidos ¡Vamos a divertirnos practicando idiomas juntos!

This group will take place every Sunday evening at The New Parkway Theater from 7pm to 8pm on the upstairs mezzanine. We are a queer and family friendly theater and strive to be a place welcome to all! Let's have fun practicing together!
